Mission Teams Return from ministry weeks During the February break, two teams of students and staff travelled to very different locations in North America to be of service and learn in a cross-cultural environment. A team of 16 students and 4 adults travelled to Mexico to serve with Foundation For His Ministry - an orphanage and outreach center on the Baja Peninsula. Daily work assignements at the mission, meeting, spending time with and playing with the children living at the orphanage and two evangelistic outreaches to local villages filled their time with challenges, learning and opportunities for God to reveal Himself to each team member. A second team made up of 12 students and four adults plus the young son of two of the chaperones spent their time in the inner city of Vancouver. The Vancouver team assisted in the work of established ministries on the lower east side of Vancouver, helping in soup kitchens, clothes distribution and meeting and praying with those who live their lives in urban poverty. As the team's visit to Vancovuer coincided with the 2010 Olympics, the team was invited to take part in a large scale outreach called "Go For The Gold" which provided hot coffee and opportunity for prayer to the countless international visitors to our nation. Both teams were deeply impacted by their experiences and all that God accomplished in and through them during their missions.
Concert Choir prepares for Easter Tour Following in a long tradition of choral music at LCBI, the 2009-10 Concert Choir is in the midst of preparing for a week long tour following the Easter weekend. A wide ranging repetoire will include traditional, gospel and sacred music as well as a few selections to bring laughter to the listening audience. Final details are being put in place for the tour which will take the choir through Alberta and Saskatchewan. In addition to regular evening concerts, the choir hopes to present a concert at an elementary school and a senior's home. An extra opportunity will be a morning servant project in the Medicine Hat area. Tentative Choir Tour Schedule: Upcoming Bison Basketball Games March Lady Bisons win provincial soccer bronze In a weekend of soccer provincial soccer competition in Outlook, the Lady Bisons came away with the bronze medal. The Lady Bisons are thrilled to be medal holders but their time in the tournament included some heartache and frustration. In their game against Outlook High School on Friday, the two teams battled hard for victory. OHS showed they have been training hard and our girls may have been affected by more than a week away from the field due to illness. It was a difficult loss, with the game ending 7-6 in a shoot out. On Saturday, the Lady Bisons were prepared to play hard and win their bronze medal. With the failure of the other team to show up to play, we were awarded our medal by default. The bronze medal clearly recognizes a strong season but it felt like an anti-climactic way to earn the placing. We congratulate the Lady Bisons on an excellent season and the recognition of provincial placing! Bisons win streak goes to three Former rivals LCBI Bisons and the Loreburn Aztecs faced off in an exhibition match on Tuesday. With realignment of conferences this year, it looked like the first year in 18 that the teams would not meet. However, since both teams had missed out on the 1A postseason (in Conference #2 and #3 respectively) they were looking for one more game to close out the season. Due to a variety of circumstances, the teams needed to play on Tuesday - both coming off a short turn around with LCBI having played on Thursday and Loreburn on Friday. It was a nice cool, fall day with little wind – great football weather. The field at LCBI was in great shape again. In the first quarter, the teams were only able to march the ball for short periods of time. Neither team was able to finish off a drive until late in the first quarter. The Aztecs hit the scoreboard first as Dylan Aadland was able to punch it in. LCBI answered back in the second quarter with two scores, one by QB Mark Gjesdal and one by Sean Ziegler. A botched snap on a convert was run in to give LCBI a 13–6 lead at the half. As agreed in the pre-game, the coaches were able to shuffle the mix of players, getting some youngsters in with the vets. Brady Norrish caught a bobbled ball and shook off some tackles to race for a long TD for the Aztecs while Giles Virgin punched in a TD for LCBI. At the end of the third it was 21-14 for LCBI. Final score of the game was 31-14. The Lady Bisons attended a tournament at Luther College on October 2-3. They came second in the round robin and ended 6th place overall. A highlight of the Luther tournament is a breakfast at which all participating teams are asked to share in a talent show. As they have done in the past, our Lady Bisons impressed the crowd with their ability to sing. The girls wrote "volleyball words" to a well known song and presented their song in harmony. Class of 2009 celebrates graduation The weekend of May 9-10 marked the graduation of the Class of 2009. Guests and family members arrived in Outlook from all across Canada, the United States, Colombia, Japan and Norway! In spite of snow Friday morning and rain Saturday morning, once the events of the weekend began, there was warmth and sunshine. The weekend was an awesome celebration of the 48 individuals who make up this graduating class. Saturday began with a formal class picture followed by a banquet for the students and their parents. A polished and well choreographed grand march showed off the poise and elegance of class members while also sharing a sense of festivity and fun. Each graduand was announcement to the assembled crowd as their future plans were read. Most of the class plans to pursue post secondary education. Many shared their hopes and dreams of becoming doctors, lawyers, missionaries, teachers, nurses, business people and musicians. The evening ended with a variety program showcasing the great wealth of talent among the class as well as a number of undergraduates who took part. Sunday morning began with an on-campus worship service. Many of the parents of graduands took part as readers and speakers. As it was Mother's Day, three members of the class shared a special song for the mothers. With the class dressed in cap and gown, the Sunday afternoon graduation ceremony saw the class walk across the stage to receive their diplomas. Paige Lemke was selected as class valedictorian and gave a moving speech on behalf of her classmates. The weekend was filled with poignant moments, opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of the class, a time for family reunion and celebration. Concert Choir returns from Easter tour The LCBI Concert Choir spent their Easter break touring through Saskatchewan and Alberta, presenting ten concerts in seven days. The choir presented a program which included gospel, classical, folk and renaissance as well as contemporary pieces. In addition, the choir presented a mini musical humorously telling the story of Samson & Delilah much to the delight of audiences. A serious drama followed with ten members of the choir depicting the Easter story dramatically through the use of dowel rods with a method called God Rods. The choir sang in large and small churches to very receptive crowds. At each stop, choir members stayed in the homes of church members and had opportunity to get to know the people in the communities. The first stop in the tour was Parkside, SK where the choir met early to practice their repertoire after spending the Easter weekend with their families. From Parkside, the tour moved on to Cold Lake, AB. Some of the students had opportunity to stay in the homes of military families on the Cold Lake air base that night. Wednesday took the choir to Edmonton for an evening concert. The following day was spent in three concerts – the first a morning presentation with the Good Samaritan Society at a home for seniors. In the afternoon, the choir visited Faith Lutheran School, a K-9 school in northeast Edmonton. The acoustics in their gym made the thirty voice choir sound like a more than a hundred! Following that concert, the children of the kindergarten class presented the choir members with a beautiful thank you card. From there, the choir moved on to Hope Mission in downtown Edmonton. Hope Mission provides meals and shelter for 300-600 homeless people each day. The choir’s visit to Hope Mission included more than a concert. The group also had opportunity to be of service in their community. Choir members helped prepare the evening meal and took part in various projects around the mission. When it was time for the meal to begin, the choir assembled and presented an hour long concert while clients ate. The experience touched many choir members deeply as songs impacted the people who were so thankful they had come to share. Additional evening concerts were held in Assiniboia, SK, Edenwold, SK, a morning service in Elbow, SK and the final concert in Saskatoon on Sunday evening to a capacity crowd at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Choir director, Michael Hensby has been directing the LCBI Concert Choir for the past thirteen years. He looks forward to the tour as an opportunity to see the choir grow from the start of tour to the end. This year was no exception as the choir represented LCBI and Outlook as being a community of tremendous talent. The LCBI Concert Choir will present their year end concert at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Outlook on Tuesday, June 9 at 7:30 pm. All are invited to come and hear the work of this year’s choir.
